"Children are not lumps of clay that a mother can mold and shape into whatever she thinks would be best. They are seedlings...already pears, pines or petunias. As gardeners, we can add only sunshine, water, fertilizer, time and love in order to make that growing plant the most beautiful specimen of what it was intended to be."

Joseph's new trick
Joseph has been entertaining us lately with what he calls his "midget man." He learned this trick one night from our babysitter and has been proudly showing it off to anyone and everyone who comes over to the house.
Unfortunately while some may find this to be 'cute', (albeit your child is darling) those of us with any of the 200 or more types of dwarfism would think otherwise. We struggle daily to be taken seriously and not as comedic objects. Not only is the physical mocking of those with dwarfism insulting, so is the use of the work 'midget'.
Please read here http://www.lpaonline.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=44397&orgId=lpa
Would you allow the sitter to teach him to mock African-Americans by painting on a black face, calling himself the "N" word and singing My Mammy?
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to educate the general public on this matter.
Wow, although I did know that the proper term was “little person” I did not know that “midget” was now considered a derogatory term comparative to the “N” word -which I would never allow. Thank you for educating me. I apologize for offending you and any others who may have been randomly searching blogs for the term “midget.”
I’ll educate my son on the proper term but I don’t think that he had any intent (as did I by posting it) to insult anyone by doing this trick. It’s just a cute thing a little boy did that I felt was worth remembering.
That is ridiculous. Children have imaginations, they can be short (midget), tall, funny, sad. This is not derogatory. It's life. And pretend. Lay off. :)
Andria! I love how your boys enjoyed the Little House books. Those movies are required inventory in our house. They are so great! I love the simple principles they teach!
Andria, Such a cute picture! Thanks for sharing and I love it! By the way did you know that I have dwarfism that runs in my family? Yes I do. I have two sets of twin dwarfs on my mothers side. It's really an interesting phenomenon. And this considering..I LOVE this post! So cute and sweet.
I also love the person who was brave enough to chastise you in a public way, and say their two cents. But was not brave enough to put their own name, picture or any other info. Way to change the world and stand by your beliefs. By being anonymous and hiding in a corner.... NICE.
Andria, keep up the awesome posts and know how much we love you, your family and your completely pure motives!

I think that is cute. We can't take life so seriously that we can't goof around a bit!

It was cute Andria! And not even CLOSE to the "N" word. Give me a break. And this is coming from someone who is rather short!!!
And by the way I want to know how he does it!
